5/5/20 Daily Checklist

I had to go into work today to pick up some papers for a student. I had planned on cleaning and packing up my teacher desk area, but that didn’t happen. I overslept, so by the time I checked in with the office, got the paperwork I needed, and visited with the ladies covering the office today, it was already 9:00. I had to leave by 11:00 to get home in time for my first Google Meet with my class. Maybe next Tuesday I can get both of the boys to go in with me to get a bunch of packing done? I really wish that we could just leave everything as is and just have them clean the carpets where the student desks are.

  • Made bed
  • No clean dishes to empty today
  • Didn’t water plants, shower this morning
  • Started the dishwasher

5/3/20 Daily Checklist

Today I was determined to find a backyard pool for the summer. We live in the south, so it’s already getting up in the 90s. I had to go to three Wal-Marts, an Academy Sports, and a Loews to find one, but I finally got it! By the time I got back home, I was too pooped to do much. The weather should be dry for the next several days, so hopefully we’ll get the yard prepared and have it setup by the weekend.

I have a department staff meeting in the morning, so I needed to get my lesson plans done for the last two weeks of school tonight. Before I knew it, I worked for 4 hours! It’s crazy how long it takes to prepare lessons for distance learning. That’s only four activities – 3 google forms and a team Kahoot! review game for tomorrow. I guess I did a little more since I have 20 text messages to my team (not counting the personal conversations we’ve had tonight as well). I miss my team!

I don’t have a green thumb, but I got myself three plants this week. One is a pretty purple hanging basket, another is a pink hydrangea bush, and one tomato plant. If I can keep them alive, I may add more in a couple of weeks. My husband reminded me that I still have to water them every day. Doh! I’m adding that to my daily checklist so I don’t forget.

5/2/20 Daily Checklist

I didn’t do a lot of housework today, but I did do my daily items. This morning was Planning Day with Lisa Woodruff. After that was over, I worked in my planner a bit. When I got to the section on creating routines for myself, I pulled up A Slob Comes Clean and started looking for the show notes of the podcast I listened to recently about her cleaning basics. Then I just started reading and taking notes. Before I knew what hit me, I had the writing bug again. I’ve been writing all afternoon and evening. I’ve added several new topics for my blog and have several posts in the works. I don’t have a set routine in the planner yet, but I do know what I need to get done daily to get my house cleaned.

  • Made bed

  • Folded and hung the laundry I started Friday
  • not enough dishes today to run tonight (only a few plates, cups and utensils)

5/1/20 Daily Checklist

Several years ago, I started following the Fly Lady to help me learn how to get my house out of CHAOS and keep it clean. The one thing that I have maintained since then is making my bed every morning when I get up. Even if the rest of my bedroom is messy, at least my bed is straight. I don’t make it perfectly mind you, but it’s neat and ready for bed at night.

I need to develop some better cleaning habits for my house. I know from past experience that if I try to do too many new things at once, nothing will stick. So this week, I’m going to focus on one new habit – DISHES. I’ve already talked to the boys. I will start the dishwasher before I go to bed, and I will empty it in the morning. They just need to put their dishes in the dishwasher – not on the counter, not in the sink, not left on the table or in their bedrooms, IN THE DISHWASHER.

Time to Refocus

I started this blog originally to support teachers. Many times we are excellent caregivers, but we don’t always take very good care of ourselves. I’ve decided to add some additional categories for the time being at least. Now that most schools are closed for in-person learning, many of us are in survival mode. I know that I’ve been on Facebook more since March than ever before in my life. I look for positive posts, funny pictures and stories, and other such things to help myself to cope with life’s uncertainties right now. I try to ignore or scroll past the petty, ignorant, or just plain mean things that are they.

One of the new groups I joined includes thousands of teachers across the country. We are supporting each other, sharing resources, laughing together, and sometimes crying together. Teachers, we are not in the alone. We are all weathering the same storm. Our ship may be different, but we are all trying to make the best of this crazy situation we are living in right now.

I’ve wanted to write for a long time. I am lucky enough to be a writing teacher, but I never seem to make time for my own writing. I decided it’s time for me to make time. If I don’t do it now when I’m forced to be at home, I’ll never make the time to do it.

This blog may never get read, and I feel like I’m rambling on a bit right now. I have so many ideas that I want to share. Facebook is great, but as you may be able to tell, I like to write. I also need to get my house in order. I have this platform already set up for my travel blog, so I might as well use it right?

Decluttering and Organizing

I have too much clutter, not enough energy to clean, and I’m a bit overwhelmed with it all. I’m gearing up this weekend to focus on my Organize 365’s 100 Day Program. I used this system last summer to take back control of my kitchen and master bedroom. That’s as far as I got when my dad passed away. I spent the rest of my summer helping my mom get her house in order and settle his estate. Without Lisa and this program, I never would have gotten through the summer with my sanity.

Cleaning House

I recently heard about a blog called “A Slob Comes Clean“. I’ve listened to a couple of her podcasts now (I’m a podcast addict), so I finally started reading her blog this weekend. One of the things she did in the beginning was post her daily checklist. They’re short and to the point about what things she did to clean her house each day. If it worked for her (accountability, not fame and fortune), it can work for me. I need some way to keep myself accountable. My 100 Day Program has its own built-in accountability, but it doesn’t really address housekeeping.

Working From Home Email System

I know this isn’t a travel-related post, but since most of us are on a working-from-home schedule right now I thought I would switch gears a bit.  I wanted to share with you something that I’ve done this week to make my working from home life a little easier.  (edit) I actually started writing this post on March 28th. I got interrupted during writing and never finished the post. We are living in such a strange time right now with COVID-19 and social distancing that I haven’t taken much time for writing. I have been using this system for several weeks now, and I have kept my school inbox to zero on most weekdays.

I’m sure you’ve all heard about the “Inbox Zero” idea. I’ve tried it in the past, but I always fall off the wagon. I’m one of those who keeps everything (yes, I’m a digital hoarder). I get so many emails each day that it’s hard to keep up with them all. Katie’s system is along the “Inbox Zero” line, but in a way that lets you quickly decide where to put the messages for later viewing if needed.

These are not all of my Gmail categories, but these are the top five that I focus upon daily. As I open an email, I can quickly decide whether I need to take action on its contents, move it to a reading list for when I have time to read lengthy messages, keep it for future reference, wait on someone else to take action or it is done and I can move it to archive at the end of the school year.

Before we started our school’s distance learning with students, I did some behind-the-scenes work to make my distance teaching schedule. Thankfully, my school district gave teachers a week to plan and prepare for distance learning. I took one of those days to clean up my inbox and create my system. If you don’t have that kind of time, just set it up and work the new stuff as it comes in. Take a little bit of time each day/week to go through your backlog and reassign categories as needed. If you need that endorphin boost from seeing the empty inbox message, create a category/folder for OLD STUFF. Move everything from your inbox to this category and mark it as read. As you work through this folder, remove the OLD STUFF category, add the new category and eventually this folder/category will be empty.

How do I make it work?

To help myself keep to some sort of schedule, I created alarms on my phone to remind me to do my required school work activities. We were asked to check our email morning and afternoon. I decided to go through my email process three times daily. I check it more often on some days depending on what is going on and whether I’m looking for something specific. However, I always check at 8:00, 12:30, and 3:30. Some days this takes 5 minutes, and sometimes 15 minutes. However, I am no longer constantly checking email or worrying that I have missed something important.

Today I’ve added a similar system to my personal email inbox. As the school year is quickly coming to an end, I took time today to focus on my home and planning for the summer. I have to say that 90% of what I get in my personal inbox are emails from companies trying to get me to buy something. I haven’t set up an archiving system yet. I simply scanned through the most recent emails, created some new categories/folders, re-labeled the messages I needed to keep track of, and marked everything as read. I may never get the uncategorized emails archived, but they are there in case I need them later. My plan is to check this once in the evenings. I’ll see how that works after a week and adjust if needed.

My “Sunday Basket” category is a holding place that mirrors my physical Sunday Basket system. It includes the “Action” and  “Waiting” categories, which is why this looks a little bit different from my work category list. Having a Sunday Basket system in my home has helped me keep better track of the household stuff that piles up during the week. Exercise Prep

We know that routines are important. We teach our students routines so that our classes run more smoothly and efficiently. Routines are just as important when we are trying to develop new habits. You probably have some routines that you perform without thinking. Some of them are healthy and some probably not so much. One routine that saves me time in the morning is my before bed routine.

Now that the winter break is over, I’m going to tweak my before bed routine to support my new exercise habit. There are a number of simple tasks that seem to take twice as long if done first thing in the morning. For example, I can pick out an outfit in the evening in a matter of seconds. However, if I try to do this in the morning as I’m getting ready for school, it takes me 3 or 4 minutes of staring, pulling things off the rack, and changing my mind several times. I bought a plastic valet hook to hang on my closet door for my bathrobe. It performs double-duty and holds my work outfit. I also purchased a cheap soap dish that matches my bathroom decor to put the earrings I wear most often.

New Routine

  • Prep coffee pot and set timer
  • Set out workout clothes, shoes, etc. in bathroom
  • Pick out tomorrow’s work outfit, shoes, jewelry
  • Make lunch for work
  • Prepare healthy to-go breakfast
  • Fill water bottle
  • Check alarms for the morning

My goal is to be more fit for my cruise this summer. I want to be able to walk anywhere I want to for as long as I want to. Fitting into a smaller size would be nice as well. This new routine will help me to be prepared for daily exercise which will help me to reach my goal. What is your goal? Decide today to create your own routine to help you achieve your goal.

When will you travel?

You have decided why you are traveling, the next step is to determine when you will be going on vacation. For us, our travel is determined by the school calendar. If you are traveling with your family, this is the first thing to check when planning your vacation. As a teacher, it is next to impossible to plan any travel during the school days. First of all, I don’t want to use up my precious personal days for planned travel. Secondly, planning for a substitute takes almost as long as being out on a school day. Although the prices are higher when school is out, it is worth it for me to plan ahead around the school breaks.

Every year I have at least one or two students miss a week of school because of a cruise. As a parent, you must outweigh the costs of taking a cruise during school days. Your student will most likely have these days count against him/her as unexcused absences. He/she will be responsible for any missed work while you are on your cruise. Some assignments are simple to do ahead of time or upon your return. However, there are some that will require direct teaching to complete. Depending on the number of classes your student has, it could take weeks for him/her to get caught up on lessons missed, assignments, and tests. As a teacher, I ask you to please keep this in mind as you are planning when to cruise.

If you are planning a cruise vacation, the rates are lowest when the sailings are first announced. This means you may be booking 12-18 months before you actually embark on your ship. If your school calendar for the next year has not been published yet, it may be safer to book a week or so after you are sure school will be out for the summer. Many cruise lines run sales periodically that can make booking closer in more affordable. However, the cabin types may be more limited. Some cruise lines will even allow you to re-price your cruise during these sales. We were fortunate enough to book during one of these sales, so our cruise price was similar to an off-peak cruise sailing.  Bottom line, book your cruise as early as possible, ask about the ability to re-price at a later date, and get busy planning!

Why are you traveling?

Personally, I have wanted to go on a cruise over the past twenty years. Convincing my husband was the biggest obstacle I faced. I didn’t want to travel on my first cruise without my best friend. Sure, I’ve taken vacations without him with my children and my mother-in-law. We’ve traveled to Galveston several times for beach vacations. However, I wanted my first international trip to be with my husband.

I wish that I could say that I finally convinced him to take a cruise with me, but his employer takes the credit on this one. He was forced to go on a cruise for work. Of course, he felt guilty that I didn’t get to travel with him, so he booked a cruise for the two of us when he returned. I’m totally ok with my first cruise being a “guilt trip”. I’m just glad that he relaxed enough to realize that he could do it again.

I’ve had co-workers, friends, and family tell me about their cruises. Over the years, I have heard enough to know that I want to travel this way too.

Teaching is a stressful profession. I have found that sometimes just having a vacation planned is enough to keep me going when the stress gets to be too much.
